Commercially, this route is less economical than the electrolysis process due to higher costs. Finely divided lithium hydroxide powders are applied as a protective neutron-absorbing coating on core structures of some research reactors. This coating controls excess reactivity and provides an emergency shutdown mechanism if temperatures rise abnormally. Lithium also has one of the highest thermal neutron absorption cross-sections.
